Just got my B format advanced copy of Sharp Shooter and it is such a gorgeous HOT pink. It’s also got the first chapter of Sharp Turn in it, so if you see it in shops, have a sneak peek!

Hi Marianne,

Thanks for mentioning the research I do for my thrillers, especially for ‘The Genesis Flaw’. To be honest I have a great deal of fun researching my stories: I’ve ended up in Antarctica for my next thriller, and was lucky enough to spend time onboard the enormous ice-breaker ship, The Aurora Australis, being given a guided tour by the wonderful ship’s master (note, not captain. He told me off for getting that wrong!).

When researching ‘The Genesis Flaw’, I really enjoyed learning about the science of genetic engineering, but the highlight had to be the time I spent with a hacker known as “Fosm”, who swept me up into a world of hackers’ jargon and chat rooms, data and identity theft, taught me how to build a Wi-Fi sniper rifle and launch a Denial Of Service attack, and even took me along to a hackers’ conference. Yes, they do have them! The conference was a hoot, I can tell you. I felt as if I’d landed on another planet where everyone spoke a weird unintelligible language. There was an undercurrent of suspicion. I discovered there were three main groups attending – the legitimate info security people, the undercover detectives who hunt down hackers, and the black hat hackers who are up to no good. All very cloak and dagger.

True to form, Connelly delivers another gripping book. Much of the narrative is taken up with the actual court proceedings as Haller crosses the floor to work for the prosecution. In less skilled hands this could have been boring or even obtuse, but for Connelly its meat and potatoes and he manages to infuse it with enough threat and tension and characterisation to make it a thoroughly enjoyable, sustained read.

One of the highlights of the Davitt awards (aside from winning the dang thing!) was the people I got to meet. Amongst them, was the lovely L.A Larkin. Louisa really knows how to do her research, which was highlighted in when Today Tonight featured her book on their segment ‘Drive By Hacker’. Read about it here.

I also met Ellen Connolly and Candy Sutton, friends, journalists and winners of the true crime section for their book, Lady Killer.

And following on the High Rollers announcement, I’m equally delighted to say that Susan Grant won the Be Immortalised in Fiction raffle  run by Sisters in Crime at the Davitt Awards, and her name will also be a character in Too Sharp. Congratulations Susan!

I’m pleased to announce that those who purchased the high roller package for the Periodic Table of Awesome project fundraiser will have their names in the next Tara Sharp novel.

Daniel Zachariou, Andreas Giannoukakis and Joel Aprile will be characters in Too Sharp!

I’ve come to Val McDermid’s Jordan/Hill series late in the piece (bit like Connelly’s Harry Bosch) but had no trouble picking up the richly drawn character arcs. Fever of the Bone is one of the best crime novels I’ve read for sustaining pace and mystery while fitting in a huge amount of character development. I never once felt the story listing as the characters, particularly Tony Hill, got to explore personal issues.

I thought she also dealt particularly well with the emotions of the parents whose children had been abducted.

Novels like this make me feel like I have so much to learn.

Brains and Hoo, the galahs in the Tara Sharp novels, are directly based on my three galahs, Bono, Rosy and Possy – and Brains (who has now sadly departed). Galahs are amazingly smart and have *very* distinct characters.

I thought it was time you got to meet the real Brains. So here is a picture of her from a few years back. Having never had any pets, we inherited Brains from friends when she was quite old, and we loved her to bits.

So in memory of Brains we acknowledge …

I’ve started work on book 3, hereto titled Too Sharp! This little old story is gonna be set in BrisVegas, as Tara has to get out of Perth for a while to let the heat cool. Can’t wait to share the river city with the world!

Here’s what it looks like!
